we ache for the loss of loss

we lose our youth,
our faith,
our mental capacities,
followed by
our memories,
our families,
our freedom,
our joy,
and our sense of self.

our brains blacken
as we grow in fear
over the loss
of our ability
to recall
and sustain
moments;

we slip into madness
and color our days in anger
and fill our nights
with tears;

we are not immortal,
not on this plane,
not here among the fallen gods,
where greed
has replaced our true
purpose;

here,
we are mere actors
in a play
that no one
cares to see,
not even
our creator.

removed;

estranged
from the very source,
we act out our lives
in desperation,
reaching to recapture
what we’ve left behind;

we are not immortal;
we live and die
with each breath;

we live just so
that one day
we can die
and we die
hoping
that one day
we will live;

we carry our pain
just as we carry our flesh,
close to our hearts;

we ache
for a perpetual state of joy;

we ache for the loss of loss.
